The Sestiere (district) of St. Mark is considered
the city centre. St. Mark square it is the point with more
places of tourist interest beginning from the Basilica, the
Doge's palace, the bell tower (100 meters), the Museum Correr,
and it leans out on the splendid Basin from where the island
of St. George, the Basilica della Salute and the Giudecca
can be admired.
The Basilica di San Marco is a unique church of Byzantine,
western European and Islamic architectural styles. The Basilica's
most precious relic is the Pala d'Or, a Venetian-Byzantine
gold relief adorned with precious gems. The Doge's Palace,

has façades which date from 1309-1424, designed by
Giovanni and Bartolomeo Buon. St. Mark's Campanile is a freestanding
bell tower that rises next to the Basilica. Its 95-meter (315-feet)
high profile dominated the Venice skyline for centuries until
1902 when, without warning, the St. Mark's Campanile collapsed.
Other attractions in the San Marco district are: the Bridge
of Sighs, the Correr Museum, the Church of San Zaccaria, the
Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, the Opera Thetre La Fenice,
the Church of Santo Stefano, the Saint Mark basin.
